Biotechnology in Healthcare: An Introduction to Biopharmaceuticals

Book Reviews: The powerful and extensive range of techniques that molecular biology now has to offer has enabled significant and rapid advances to be made in our understanding and treatment of a number of human diseases. Indeed, the recent upsurge in the number of small biotechnology companies wishing to capitalize on the plethora of research findings from academic institutions, for the purpose of developing novel approaches to drug discovery and development, illustrates the importance of molecular biology to the biopharmaceutical industry today. It is imperative, therefore, that all researchers and students involved in medical and scientific research and drug development have at least a basic understanding of the techniques of molecular biology and how they are being applied to the diagnosis and treatment of disease. This book is intended to serve as a source of information for medical, dental, pharmacy and science undergraduates and postgraduates and healthcare workers who wish to extend their knowledge of molecular biology and its clinical applications. The book is divided into discrete chapters, each of which addresses an individual area of biotechnology and describes the basics of that area followed by examples of how it is being used clinically and the relevance of the technique in healthcare today. The first three chapters provide a basic introduction to molecular biology, genetics and gene cloning, whereas subsequent chapters describe more specific techniques and applications of biotechnology, e.g. the polymerase chain reaction and DNA fingerprinting. It is hoped that this text will serve as a reference source for those healthcare workers who wish to extend their understanding of a variety of techniques that they will come across in their day-to-day duties and for any individual who is interested in learning more about recent developments in biotechnology and their relevance to the diagnosis of disease and clinical medicine.
