Essentials of Nonprescription Medications and Devices

Essentials of Nonprescription Medications and Devices 1st EdBook Reviews: There is a large increase in the number of people assuming more responsibility for their own healthcare by using nonprescription medications, especially for many common conditions such as colds, allergies, and heartburn. Two important factors contribute to this rise in self-care. First, the number of prescription (Rx) drugs that have been switched to over-the-counter (OTC) status (Rx–OTC switch) by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has increased, making more effective medications available to consumers at reduced costs. Second, the increased cost of medical care has prompted many people to go without medical insurance, thus avoiding or delaying a visit to a physician.

Self-care may involve better nutrition, more physical activity, and use of nonprescription drug products. Several different types of product are available, including home test kits and medical devices, OTC drugs, dietary supplements and herbal remedies, and homeopathic products. There are important distinctions among these products that pharmacists and consumers should understand before choosing a product for use.

This text is intended to provide pharmacists, pharmacy students, and individuals interested in self-care an easy to use reference for common conditions and products available for prevention and treatment. The initial chapter of this text describes the role the FDA exercises in controlling and monitoring products for self-care in the USA. The chapters that follow provide brief descriptions of common medical conditions amenable to self-care for specific physiological systems and nonprescription products available for treatment.

The format for each chapter includes the pharmacological drug category of the drug for therapy, indications for use, the mode of action of the drug, warnings and precautions for the drug’s use, recommended dose, and popular brand name products available in the USA. Sample case scenarios are included at the end of the chapter.
